The Building Blocks of Tomorrow
PROJECT 3
Light

Objective
You have been selected to design a proposed non-denominational chapel located on the campus of Farmingdale State College. The College wants this to be a profoundly spiritual place that people of all faiths can worship and reflect on life’s events. The College believes this can be achieved by the creative use of light. The College has outlined a preliminary program that is listed below. A site has yet to selected on campus; the College is looking for guidance from the Architect. The building should be integrated into the fabric of the campus. The College explicitly requests the design not be symmetrical.

NARRATIVE
Farmingdale State College has asked our firm to create a place for sanctuary on the Campus. The Campus has allowed the firm full control of where the sanctuary will be placed on campus. This is necessary because the college would like the architects to control light in order to make the chapel spatially dynamic. The Meditation Chapel will be located to the east in order to make use of early morning sun. this chapel can be used for people to clear their minds before the long day ahead of them. A Main sanctuary will be facing south to make use of the midday sun, when most people will congregate. Located on the western side will be the Memorial Chapel. It is located on the western side because of its use of the low, western sun. This Memorial Chapel can be used to honor the lives of those who have passed.
